John E. Kelly III ’78 Scholarship Recipient

I’ve always wanted to change the world. Even before Rensselaer. My father passed away when I was 14, and after I lost him I made it a goal to impact every person’s life who I touch, because one person can’t change the world by themselves, but when you inspire others, one person becomes many. I found Rensselaer while looking for good physics schools online. I wasn’t really sure what to expect but I applied anyway. “Why not change the world?” my acceptance letter said. So I said, “Why not?”

As I began my journey at Rensselaer, I started as a physics major with dreams to become an astronaut. That dream changed quickly when I decided that I was not as passionate about physics as I once was. My switch to a mathematics major has been a challenging one, but led me to what really gets me out of bed in the morning — photography.

My father was my hero and, coincidentally, a lifetime photographer and computer architect. During my time at Rensselaer, I discovered photography and realized how fun it is. Since then, I have been able to build my own photography business to supplement some of the costs of being a college student. Photography is something I hope to pursue after graduation, but I am still looking for a full-time position where I can use my analytical background and mathematics degree to launch my career.

One thing that has defined my experience at Rensselaer is my fraternity. My brothers have been some of the greatest friends I have ever had. At times, there are experiences that have felt unbearable, but the men I have by my side have helped make it anything but that. The opportunity that I have been given to attend Rensselaer has allowed me to become the man I am today. I am so grateful for the scholarship I have received over the past four years, as I would not be here without it.
